The finding aid mounted here is an index to the entire collection of 9,400 negatives in the Lilly Librarys Hohenberger collection. The index and the arrangement of the negatives were created by Hohenberger himself for his own purposes. The index should be considered a "work in progress" as the Lilly Library staff has made and continues to make additions and corrections when necessary.
The arrangement Hohenberger used is chiefly by size of negative: 3x4, 4x5, 5x7, etc. Within the size, the negatives are frequently in chronological order by date the photograph was taken. Hohenberger also designated certain subject-oriented categories of negatives: e.g. birds, winter, etc. These are not to be regarded as the location of all images on that subject, however. There will be other birds and winter scenes within the various size classifications . It should also be noted that Hohenberger himself often repeated photographs and would then place essentially duplicate shots into more than one category in his index / negative file.
Currently on the Hohenberger web site, there are 407 images available for viewing. This number will continue to grow as more images from the collection are digitized. On this site, you can search the entire finding aid, which contains the total collection of just over 18,700 items, or mark the option to browse only items with online images.
Note re: "I.U. Negatives" category. This is
not one of Hohenbergers subject categories and does not relate in any way to
photographs of Indiana University. Rather, these are negatives made from original prints
in the collection for which no Hohenberger negatives existed in the Lilly collection. They
are negatives resulting from user requests for copies of such prints, and are numbered
sequentially as produced. As requests are made for copies of original prints for which
there are no existing negatives, new negatives will be added to the "I.U.
Negatives" category.
The finding aid does not have a controlled vocabulary use as many words in the search as possible, either in separate simple searches or with a Boolean "or".
For example, when searching for images of people eating, try looking for words like: eat, dine, food, breakfast, lunch, supper, etc.
Hohenberger frequently had misspellings in his index, and particularly of peoples names.
If a persons correctly-spelled name does not result in a hit, try various alternative spellings. For example, Johnson, Johnston, and Johnstone or MacDonald and McDonald. Further, it is best to only enter the last name of the person being searched since Hohenberger might not have used the first name.
Many of the index entries are not especially descriptive of the image.
For example, the entry for the negative called "Homeward Bound" by Hohenberger does not contain any words like "horses," "wagon," or "barn" and all three of these are part of the image. Sometimes selecting the "Browse the Entire Collection" is the most effective way to search the index..
Hohenbergers sense of humor can sometimes create confusion and searching difficulties.
For example, for many years several of the men on the Liars Bench were identified by him as "Mosey Scott, Woody Jackson, Andy Sampson, and Cal Duard," when in reality they were "Scott Moser, Jack Woods, Sam Anthony, Duard Calvin."
