Using SEARCH
- - General
Tips
- To search, type
words or phrases in the search box and click the "Submit" button.
The search engine will check the descriptions, assigned subject
headings, dates, box and folder numbers, and id numbers of images for matches.
By default, the search engine uses the "Match all words" menu
option to find images with all the search terms you
specify.
- - Finding
Exact Phrases
- To refine your
search, use the "Match exact phrase" menu option to the right of
the search box to match your search terms exactly, in the order in
which they appear.
- - Broadening
Your Search
- If your
searches do not produce any matches, try broadening your search
using the "Match any words" menu option to the right of the search
box. This will find images that match at least one of your search
terms.

Using ADVANCED SEARCH
- - General
Tips
-
The Advanced Search allows you to search for images associated with
a date or date range, and to search for terms within the image description and
subject headings fields.
-
- The Image Description Field
-
The search terms you enter into the Image Description area will be matched with text in the image caption and image description fields. You may search on the Image Description field alone or in combination with the
Subject and Date fields.
-
- The Subject Field
-
You may search on the Subject field alone or in combination with the
Image Description and Date fields.
Each image in the collection has been assigned between one and nine descriptive subject headings.
If you know the subject headings you would like to search on,
enter them in the "Subject" area. For a list of subject headings
to choose search terms from, click the Subject link to the left of the
search box. A second window displaying an alphabetical index will open.
Click a letter in the index to view lists of subject headings beginning
with that letter.
- - The Date Field
-
The Date field cannot be used alone; use it in combination with the
Image Description and/or Subject fields to further refine your Advanced
Search.
Dates must be entered in the following format:
YYYY-MM-DD
You may search for a single date by typing the date in both the "From:" box and
the "To:" box. Enter different dates in the "From:" and "To:" boxes to search for a date range. Entering a date only in the "From:" box yields results from that date onwards. Entering a date only in the "To:" box yields results up to and including that date.
You may use a shortened form of the YYYY-MM-DD format to search for a year, or for a year and a month. For instance, you could search for images in the year 1905 by typing
1905 in the "From:" and "To:" boxes. To search for images in the year 1905 and the month
of May, type 1905-05 in the "From:" and "To:" boxes.

Using ID SEARCH
-
- General Tips
- Each image in the
collection is displayed with its unique identification number, such as
CRA-42-109-919. If you know the ID number of an image, the ID Search is the quickest and most efficient way to retrieve it. You may also enter partial ID numbers into this box.
