Metadata Internship

The internship in metadata for digital libraries will provide students with hands-on experience using one or more metadata schemas in a production digital library environment. Students will be exposed to descriptive, technical, administrative, preservation, and/or structural metadata schemas; use and importance of both data content and data structure standards; mapping of metadata between formats; the process for choosing a metadata schema for a digital library project; and workflows for creating metadata.

Duties:

  • Create descriptive, technical, administrative, preservation, and/or structural metadata for digital library objects
  • Assist in planning metadata strategies for digital library projects
  • Write crosswalks to map metadata between formats
  • Develop and document work flows for creating metadata for digital library projects

Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with metadata schema in common use in digital libraries, including Dublin Core, VRA Core, MODS, MARC, MARCXML, EAD, TEI, and METS
  • Working knowledge of XML technologies such as XSLT and XPath

SLIS Prerequisites:

  • S503 Representation and Organization
  • S504 Cataloging
  • S603 XML Workshop (or equivalent skills)
