Sound Directions: Digital Audio Preservation and Access for Global Audio Heritage

Appendix A: Summary of Project Goals for Standards and Best Practices

As detailed in the narrative, the Sound Directions project will develop best practices and test standards in the following areas:

Technical Metadata

Research and develop best practices for implementing the AES standards including:

  • develop tools for collecting technical audio metadata
  • develop databases for storing technical metadata
  • develop procedures for the use of the above tools and databases
  • answer questions relating to who collects metadata, at what stage, and the resources and expertise that are needed

Construction and Exchange of Preservation Packages

Research and develop best practices for the construction, storage, and sharing of preservation digital files and metadata based on the OAIS model, including:

  • develop tools for building SIPs (Submission Information Packages) using the METS schema
  • develop METS profile(s) for SIPs, AIPs, and DIPs for digital audio preservation

Digital Files

Research and develop best practices for:

  • role of the Broadcast Wave file format in an archival preservation project with an extensive metadata system
  • file names, announcements, content markings
  • use of embedded material identifiers
  • characteristics of flat or unaltered files
  • use of signal processing

Derivatives

Research and develop best practices in the following areas:

  • process of producing derivatives
  • technical issues impacting the quality of derivatives
  • resources and expertise needed
  • durability appropriate for an archival preservation project
  • amount and type of redundancy desirable for an archival preservation project

Quality Control

Research and develop best practices for:

  • who performs quality control
  • what procedures are followed
  • what resources are needed

Workflow

Research and develop best practices in the following areas:

  • personnel--what expertise is needed for each link in the preservation chain
  • management procedures and systems that encourage efficiency
  • technical infrastructure needed to support a specific workflow

Storage and Digital Repositories

Research and develop best practices for:

  • Ingestion and storage of digital audio objects in digital library repositories
  • Implementation of preservation services (including migration and data integrity checking) for digital audio in digital library repositories
  • Dissemination of digital audio objects for transfer to other repositories

File Reconstruction

Research and develop procedures and best practices for implementing AES-31-3 in our workflows
