Introduction
Note to users: although much of this site is complete, many areas are still under construction. Content is being added/updated weekly. If you have any questions about the content of this site, or about Variations3 cataloging, please do not hesitate to e-mail Casey Mullin at mullinca@indiana.edu.
Variations is a digital music library software system that provides online access to streaming audio and scanned score images. The system also includes analysis and annotation tools useful in music teaching and learning.
Variations3 extends the system developed during the Variations2 project to other educational institutions of varying size. Participating institutions include Indiana University, New England Conservatory of Music, Ohio State University, the Tri-College Consortium (Haverford college, Swarthmore College, and Bryn Mawr College), and University of Maryland. The Variations3 project, funded from October 1, 2005 through September 30, 2008, is supported by a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The Variations3 Metadata site is intended to be a central hub of metadata-related information that is not represented on the internal project wiki for project catalogers, digitizers, and other interested parties. Rules and procedures established during the Variations2 project are presently being revised to reflect changes in the system and rules that were introduced after the related Variations2 metadata documents were first created. Alterations are also being made to accomodate the cooperative nature of the Variations3 project. As a result, whereas much of the content presently on this site will remain, a great deal has yet to be included. Where applicable, links have been included to the old guidelines or a message displays indicating that content for the page topic has yet to be created. Working documents will not be included in the site, but may be accessed by project partners through the internal project wiki.
