This oral history of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University traces creation of the Center from its earliest stages and its evolution into a fully operating academic institution dedicated to the study of philanthropy. It includes the negotiations in bringing the Fund Raising School to Indianapolis, Indiana, the grant proposals to the Lilly Endowment, finding the Center's first director, and the creation of its mission statement. This project also contains many different people's views on the study of philanthropy and the importance and success of the Center.

Dwight Burlingame discusses the three and a half years he spent as the director of academic programs and research at IUPUI's Center on Philanthropy. He speaks of developing a curriculum specific to the center and working with other academic departments to develop cross-listed courses. He also discusses the development of the Master of Arts program and plans for developing a minor in philanthropy for undergraduates. He also touches upon the Center on Philanthropy's relationship to other similar institutions throughout the country. He discusses the definition and role of philanthropy and nonprofit institutions.

Howard Mehlinger, former dean of the School of Education at Indiana University, and one of the original advisory board members to the Center on Philanthropy, discusses his role in the founding years of the Center. Most notably, he was heavily involved in the first search for the director of the Center, which ultimately hired Robert L. Payton. With Mr. Payton, he was also involved in the planning of the , the first major conference sponsored by the Center. He also gives his analysis of the results and impact of the conference.

Dorothy "Dottie" Rosso, wife of Henry Rosso and partner in the original Fund Raising School, speaks of the early years of the school and its evolution, leading to its move to IUPUI to join the Center on Philanthropy. She discusses what she feels is a shift of the original mission of the school in helping grassroots organizations raise funds to serving people in larger organizations that may not necessarily appeal or apply to grassroots fundraising. She touches upon her disappointment in the loss of personal touch when the school moved to IUPUI, a larger, more bureaucratic organization.

James Wood speaks of his involvement with the Center on Philanthropy first as the associate director of academic research and then the Bloomington campus coordinator for the Center on Philanthropy. He discusses the Bloomington campus's perception of the Center and his efforts to create more exposure and participation on the Bloomington campus. He concludes with his perceptions on the changes in the philosophy and mission of the Center and possible future activities.
