About Metadata Services

Our metadata philosophy is simple: capture metadata at the most robust level possible, in formats appropriate for the materials, and create views of that metadata for specific uses of the materials. We're committed to the creation of high-quality metadata that can be leveraged to provide high-quality services. We believe that this goal can be achieved only through metadata experts working closely with content experts to understand the nature and use of collections.

Services

  • Consulting: We are happy to consult on the selection of appropriate metadata standards, application of metadata standards to specific projects, and the use of metadata in search and browse systems.
  • Supervising metadata creation: For projects in which the Digital Library Program plays an official role, DLP staff can set up and oversee metadata creation activities.
  • OAI-PMH metadata sharing: We expose metadata for many of our digital projects through the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting. The BaseURL for our OAI data provider is http://oai.dlib.indiana.edu/phpoai/oai2.php.

Metadata Activities at DLP

The DLP applies various metadata standards to specific projects. As we implement these projects we develop documentation to help our partners and the general public understand and apply the standards on their own. The following links lead to additional information and documentation about using these standards. (This list will continue to grow over time.)
